Snap SPECS — The Computer You Wear
What happens when your computer stops living inside a screen and starts living in the world around you?
Meet Snap SPECS, a new generation of standalone augmented-reality glasses designed to bring computing, artificial intelligence and digital experiences directly into your field of view.
SPECS are built by Snap as a fully standalone AR computer, combining see-through displays, AI, hand and voice interaction, spatial computing and a growing ecosystem of AR experiences.
A computer built into glasses
Unlike conventional AR headsets, SPECS are designed as everyday wearable glasses.
There is no external puck or tether.
The computing hardware is built directly into the glasses, allowing digital experiences to appear within the physical environment around you.
Snap describes SPECS as a new category between lightweight AI glasses and more cumbersome AR headsets.
AR that understands your surroundings
SPECS are designed around a simple interaction model:
SEE → UNDERSTAND → INTERACT → EXPERIENCE
The glasses can place digital information and interactive experiences directly into the physical world.
Potential experiences include:
- AI assistance
- Augmented-reality education
- Translation
- Navigation
- Entertainment
- Gaming
- Fitness and sports training
- Music
- Hands-free communication
- Virtual workspaces
- Shopping experiences
- Shared AR experiences
SPECS Intelligence
Snap has also introduced SPECS Intelligence, an AI service designed to work across SPECS, iPhone and Mac.
The system is designed to understand information such as your goals, priorities, relationships and routines from services you choose to connect.
On SPECS, this can extend AI assistance into the physical world, allowing relevant information to appear directly in your field of view.
A massive virtual screen
SPECS can transform the space around you into a virtual entertainment environment.
Snap says its browser can provide a virtual display that feels like a 115-inch cinema screen positioned approximately 10 feet away.
The system can also support services including YouTube and HBO Max.
Translation in your field of view
SPECS can translate conversations and display subtitles directly in the user’s view.
Snap says its translation experience supports 60 languages, allowing translated speech to appear as visual captions while maintaining awareness of the surrounding environment.
Navigation without looking down
Instead of constantly checking a smartphone, SPECS can overlay navigation directions onto the physical environment.
Users can enter a destination or use voice interaction, with directional guidance appearing within the AR display.
A new way to work
SPECS can also function as a portable workspace.
The glasses can connect wirelessly to a computer and expand the workspace beyond the physical boundaries of a traditional monitor.
Experiences such as virtual whiteboards allow users to brainstorm, organize information and create diagrams within their surroundings.
Bluetooth peripherals such as keyboards can also be used.
Designed for everyday wear
SPECS use a high-performance Swiss TR90 polymer construction and are available in two sizes.
47 mm: approximately 132 g
52 mm: approximately 136 g
Removable prescription inserts are also supported.
The glasses use see-through AR optics and Snap’s waveguide technology to place digital content into the user’s view while maintaining visibility of the physical world.
Privacy by design
Because AR glasses can see and hear the world around the wearer, privacy is a major part of the technology.
Snap states that SPECS do not use facial recognition to identify people and do not continuously record or save audio, video or photographs.
When the wearer takes a photo or records video or audio, an external LED indicates that recording is taking place.
Users can also control which information and services SPECS can access.

The next interface
Smartphones changed computing by putting a powerful computer into our pockets.
SPECS represent another possible transition:
From screens → to space.
Instead of leaving the physical world to interact with technology, digital information can become part of the environment around us.
SPECS are an early example of this direction — a computer designed to see, understand and interact with the world alongside you.
